It’s not uncommon for people to fail to make plans for end-of-life care because they don’t want to think about it. However, this is an important topic, and while it may not be the easiest subject to explore, it can still ultimately be a positive experience. The advantage of thinking and talking about end-of-life care when you are healthy is that you can make decisions when you are not under stress.

Your Health Now

No one lives forever, and there is no health regimen that can guarantee that you won’t develop a certain condition. However, taking steps to be as healthy as you can may increase your quality of life whatever your age. As you get older, continuing to remain active and to make healthy nutritional choices can mean that you have a stronger immune system and are less vulnerable to illness.

This doesn’t mean that you have to eat a restricted diet unless a medical professional tells you that you do or that you have to run marathons. Try to find activities and food that are good for you that you also love. You might be amazed at how simple things like stretching exercises for seniors can make a huge difference on how your body functions overall. How might you modify those activities if you were unable to continue doing them with the same vigor so that you could still get enjoyment out of them?

Consider Your Priorities

What matters more to you, quality, or longevity of life? The answer to this question will be different for everyone, and there is no single correct answer, but it is something you must consider when you think about leaving instructions for end-of-life care. You should think about practical matters as well. For example, if you have life insurance and you are diagnosed with a terminal illness, you might be able to sell the policy using a viatical settlement. You could then use the funds to provide additional care for yourself or even to do something you may have dreamed of, such as taking a trip. Make a Plan

With the above points in mind, think about what steps you could take to accommodate any future illness or disability. It’s important to talk to your doctor and your family about your wishes regarding your healthcare. This does not just help ensure that you will be able to get the care that you need but it also means that if you aren’t able to express your wishes, they will know what you want instead of having to guess at it, and this can be a relief for them during a stressful time. You might want to also talk to an attorney about putting your wishes in writing and appointing someone who can make health care decisions for you if you are unable to do so.
