7 Factors that Cause Nausea in the Morning

What do people mean when they say they feel nausea in the morning? Nausea generally can be felt at any point in the day, but what generally causes nausea in the morning? To understand this, we must first understand what nausea means.

What is Nausea?

Most people tend to wake up with nausea in the morning due to several factors. Nausea is an uncomfortable feeling that seems like stomach pain that makes an individual feel sick and creates an urge to vomit. This uncomfortable sensation, though not painful, can make a person very restless.

Many everyday chores or excess strain can also trigger morning nausea or nausea in general. However, it is important to note that nausea might not necessarily stem from any underlying disease. Before looking at what causes nausea in the morning, let us explore the symptoms of nausea.

Symptoms of Nausea

1. Vomiting Sensation

There is a constant urge to vomit. It might not necessarily lead to vomiting, but the sensation of it makes a person feel very sick.

2. Poor Appetite

One might not feel like consuming food, which can lead to low blood sugar levels in the body.

3. Stomach Ache

Abdominal pain, acid reflux, or simply an upset stomach. One can be exposed to all these and other symptoms during nausea. The symptoms remain the same, whether you experience nausea in the morning or at any point in the day.

4. Sweating

One might also end up profusely sweating due to nausea. All these factors affect the health conditions of an individual.

What causes Nausea in the Morning?

1. Food Poisoning

This is a foodborne disease where an individual consumes contaminated food that harms his body. The digested matter or food here harms the body’s normal functioning as the stomach contents (harmful bacteria) disrupt the balance in the body. Food poisoning is a common symptom not just in nausea but also during vomiting and diarrhea. An individual would potentially suffer from pain in the abdomen and feel nauseous and sick.

Fluid intake can help an individual during such times. Avoid spicy foods, do not consume too much alcohol, and have frequent meals, but eat foods that are mild on your body. Avoid harsh or processed foods that would be difficult for the body to digest.

2. Pregnancy

It is quite common for pregnant women to feel nausea in the morning. It is commonly termed morning sickness and usually occurs during early pregnancy. This is often caused due to hormonal changes that are common in pregnant women. One might experience nausea when the human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG), a hormone in the human body, is at its highest. This nausea can hit an individual in the morning or at any time of the day. 3. Motion Sickness

A sickness that arises due to travel or motion, in other words. This often happens when traveling in a bus, car, train, flight, ship, or another transportation mode. In such scenarios, your brain receives contradicting signals it cannot understand. For example, let us say you are traveling in your car as you are trying to read a book. Now, while your eyes perceive steadiness, your ears sense the presence of motion. This difference in messages confuses, making a person feel sick and nauseous.

However, there are many ways in which an individual can avoid motion sickness. You start by drinking water. Yes, keeping yourself hydrated is extremely important as it helps the cells in your body. They remain healthy and fully charged and can work to their full potential. Consume frequent meals. Consume meals in small quantities to help your body.

Avoid smoking, and try and get fresh air as much as possible. In addition, you could also try sitting in the front side of the vehicle or perhaps closing your eyes and reducing the number of varying signals you send to your body. The less your brain receives, the better your body can handle itself.

Motion sickness is temporary and will go away quickly if the right steps are taken to tackle it. So if you are traveling in the morning, then the motion can be one of the causes of nausea in the morning.

4. Low Blood Sugar Level

There is a huge gap between our dinner and breakfast. The blood sugar can potentially steep down low due to a lack of food in the body. So when you wake up too hungry and do not consume proper breakfast, there are high chances that you might experience nausea in the morning.

Try and consume your food at least two hours after waking up. However, do consume fluids as soon as you wake up to keep your body hydrated. Assess what you’ve consumed the previous night. If your meal was very light the previous night, you must consume good food on time the next morning to avoid nausea. You must consider fruit juice as it quickly hypes up your blood sugar levels.

5. Migraine

You are more likely to experience nausea in the morning if you are already predisposed to certain health conditions like migraine. Excess muscle tension, stress, or exposure to extreme or harsh sounds and light can trigger migraines. Normal headaches, too, can trigger nausea.

This is a condition where nausea arises due to underlying diseases. This requires medical attention and thus must be brought to the notice of your doctor.

Migraines can be very uncomfortable and painful. They can potentially disrupt everyday activities. Get yourself tested for migraine if you are having frequent and painful headaches. Migraine makes you very sensitive to light or other similar stimuli, eventually triggering nausea and vomiting. Get immediate medical attention to avoid any serious complications.

6. Muscle Tension

Excess muscle strain can also cause severe or mild nausea in the morning. Inappropriate sleeping positions or sleep issues, in general, can also cause nausea in the morning. Have a regular sleeping pattern, be mindful of your sleeping position, and avoid excessively straining your muscles.

How to Relieve Nausea?

1. Fresh Air

Go out and consume the fresh air. Fresh air can help you feel better. Go to your window or your roof and quietly enjoy the breeze.

2. Ginger

Peer-reviewed studies have proven ginger to be a good ingredient to relieve nausea. So grab a ginger tea or simply consume foods high in ginger to avoid nausea immediately.

3. Lemon

You would have often come across people carrying lemons if they are vulnerable to motion sickness. Or, you might have also seen someone recommending the sick to sniff lemons, claiming they would help them feel less nauseous. Yes, the smell of lemon or similar citrus foods has the ability to avoid nausea.

If you are someone who often feels nauseous, then carry some lemons, ginger tea, or ginger cookies to tackle them.

4. Breathing

It is also quite common to feel anxious while feeling nauseous. Relaxing your body and using techniques to calm and soothe your body can also help with nausea during these times. This is where breathing comes in, or more specifically, deep breathing comes in. Try and take deep breaths and try to relax your body. Help your body understand that you are fine and in control of what you are feeling and going through. 

5. Water

Staying hydrated, as mentioned earlier, is the key to a healthy body. Consume sufficient water every day and protect yourself from dehydration. Dehydration is also one of the causes why someone would feel nauseous in the morning or any time of the day.

Suppose you are nauseous and do not have ginger, lemon, or other food items that could help you feel better, switch to water. Do not gulp water immediately; take small sips and allow your body to heal.

In general, too, it is best advised to consume at least 8 to 10 glasses of water per day or as needed by your body to maintain a healthy life. Do not drink too much or too little; understand your body’s signs and drink as necessary.

Feeling nausea in the morning is very common. It does not necessarily stem from underlying diseases but mostly from poor lifestyle habits. Be more conscious of your habits and choices, and work towards a healthy lifestyle. Simple changes in life can make a huge difference. Avoid discomfort or nausea by living a healthier and more conscious life.
